MACARONS.
The French have invaded us. Stripey shirts, un-ironic berets, bad electronica, food elitism, a tendency to sit in cafes for hours just pouting…it’s all there. The good news? We also get their charming baked goods. Macarons have been popping up in ladylike coffee shops and yuppie bakeries all around the country. The girlie girl’s answer to patchouli-infested, hippy dippy 24-hour coffee places, the US version of a French patisserie involves bistro tables, fresh flowers, overpriced pastries, and a totally hot girl with non-prescription glasses sulking behind the counter. Fork over two bucks for two bites of a rose-infused sugary confection and hum Serge Gainsbourg under your breath to look cultured and worldly.
